What's Actually Happening
Governor Murphy signed legislation in January aligning New Jersey with updated federal standards on hemp-derived THC. The law targets the gray market that's been selling delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 products outside the licensed cannabis system — at gas stations, smoke shops, CBD stores, and vape shops throughout Northern NJ.
Here's the bottom line:
Any hemp product with more than 0.3% total THC or more than 0.4mg of THC per container is now classified as cannabis under NJ law
After April 13, those products can only be sold by businesses licensed by the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission
Retailers that keep selling over-limit products face fines starting at $100 and escalating to $10,000 per violation
Translation: the corner store delta-8 gummies are going away. And honestly? That's a good thing.
