NJ Cannabis Laws & Your Rights

14 questions

Yes. Adult-use recreational cannabis has been legal in New Jersey since April 2022 for adults 21 and older. Sales are overseen by the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC). You can legally purchase, possess, and consume cannabis from licensed dispensaries like Emerald Tea Supply Co. in Bloomfield, NJ.

You must be 21 years of age or older to purchase, possess, or consume recreational cannabis in New Jersey. A valid government-issued photo ID is required at every purchase — both in-store and for delivery. There are no exceptions.

Adults 21+ can legally possess up to 6 ounces (170g) of cannabis in New Jersey. You may also possess up to 17 grams of hashish.

Important: Possessing more than 6 ounces is a fourth-degree crime punishable by up to 18 months in prison and fines up to $25,000.

Note: Dispensaries can only sell up to 1 ounce per transaction — the purchase limit and possession limit are different numbers.

New Jersey dispensaries are permitted to sell a maximum of 1 ounce (28.35g) per transaction. This applies to all product types combined. You may legally possess up to 6 ounces total, but each individual purchase cannot exceed 1 ounce.

Legal consumption locations include:

  • Private residences — your home or the home of someone who permits it. Note: landlords may prohibit cannabis use on their property.
  • Licensed cannabis consumption areas — designated spaces at certain licensed dispensaries. The NJ-CRC began issuing consumption area endorsements in 2025.

You cannot consume cannabis in public spaces, parks, vehicles, schools, or federal property.

No. Consuming cannabis in a vehicle is illegal in New Jersey, whether the car is moving or parked. This applies to both drivers and passengers. Cannabis must be stored in a sealed container in the trunk or an area not accessible to the driver.

No. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in New Jersey and is treated similarly to drunk driving (DWI). Penalties can include license suspension, fines, and jail time. Never drive after consuming cannabis.

No. Home cultivation remains illegal in New Jersey for personal use. Only licensed cultivators are permitted to grow cannabis in the state. Purchasing from a licensed dispensary like Emerald Tea Supply Co. is the only legal way to obtain cannabis in NJ.

Under the NJ CREAMMA Act, employers generally cannot take adverse action against employees solely for off-duty cannabis use. However, employers can still enforce workplace drug policies and prohibit on-the-job consumption. Federally regulated roles may have different rules. Consult an employment attorney for your specific situation.

Yes. New Jersey law allows landlords to prohibit cannabis smoking or consumption on their property. If your lease prohibits cannabis, you may face eviction for violating that clause. Always check your lease before consuming in a rental.

Yes. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID can legally purchase cannabis in New Jersey regardless of which state they are from. However, you cannot transport cannabis across state lines — it is a federal offense to carry NJ cannabis into any other state.

Accepted forms of government-issued photo ID include:

  • Driver's license (any U.S. state)
  • State-issued ID card
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Military ID

Your ID must be valid (not expired). Expired IDs are not accepted for in-store or delivery orders.

Yes. In 2025, the NJ-CRC began issuing consumption area endorsements to licensed dispensaries, allowing adults 21+ to consume cannabis on-site in designated, ventilated spaces. Availability varies by location.

No. Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime regardless of the legal status of cannabis in either state. All cannabis purchased at Emerald Tea Supply Co. must remain within New Jersey.

  • Concentrates — wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, and more
→ View Full Menu

Cannabis flower is the harvested and dried bud of the cannabis plant — the most traditional form of cannabis. It is typically smoked in a pipe, bong, or rolled into a joint. Flower offers fast onset (within minutes), a wide variety of strain options, and precise control over dosage.

Pre-rolls are pre-made joints — cannabis flower ground up and rolled into a paper, ready to light and smoke. They are convenient, require no equipment, and come in a wide range of strains and sizes. Some pre-rolls are infused with concentrates for added potency.

Edibles are food and beverage products infused with cannabis — gummies, chocolates, drinks, and more. Because edibles are processed through the digestive system they take significantly longer to take effect: typically 30 minutes to 2 hours, with effects lasting 4–8 hours.

Important for beginners: Start with a low dose (5–10mg THC) and wait at least 2 hours before consuming more. The most common mistake is taking more because the first dose seems not to be working, then being overwhelmed when both doses hit at once.

Vape cartridges contain cannabis oil or distillate and attach to a compatible battery to produce inhalable vapor. They are discreet, portable, and offer fast onset similar to flower. Disposable vapes are self-contained units requiring no battery. Vapes come in 0.5g and 1g sizes across a wide range of strain-specific flavors and cannabinoid ratios.

Tinctures are liquid cannabis extracts delivered via a dropper under the tongue (sublingual). Sublingual absorption is faster than edibles — onset 15–45 minutes — and allows for precise, measurable dosing. Tinctures are popular with medical patients and those seeking a smoke-free option.

Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made from freshly harvested, flash-frozen cannabis plants rather than dried and cured flower. The flash-freezing process preserves more of the plant's terpenes, resulting in a more aromatic and flavorful product. Live resin is available as a concentrate, in vape cartridges, and as an additive in infused pre-rolls.

  • Indica — traditionally associated with relaxing, body-heavy effects. Often used in the evening.
  • Sativa — traditionally associated with uplifting, energizing effects. Often used during the day.
  • Hybrid — bred from both, can lean either direction depending on the strain.

Modern cannabis science emphasizes that terpene profiles and cannabinoid ratios matter more than the indica/sativa label alone. Our budtenders can help you find the right product based on your desired effect.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the "high." THC percentage indicates how much THC is present by weight. Higher percentage does not always mean a better experience — terpenes, CBD content, and individual tolerance all play a role. As a general guide: under 15% is mild, 15–25% is moderate, above 25% is high potency.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high. Products with higher CBD and lower THC tend to produce more subtle, calming effects and are popular with consumers who want the benefits of cannabis without significant psychoactive effects.

We do not make health or medical claims about CBD or any cannabis product. Consult your healthcare provider for medical guidance.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds that give each cannabis strain its distinctive smell and flavor. Beyond aroma, terpenes are believed to interact with cannabinoids to influence the overall experience — known as the "entourage effect." Common terpenes include myrcene (musky, relaxing), limonene (citrus, uplifting), pinene (pine, alert), and caryophyllene (spicy, calming).

Yes. All cannabis products sold at licensed NJ dispensaries must pass state-mandated laboratory testing before sale. Lab results verify cannabinoid potency and confirm the absence of harmful pesticides, mold, heavy metals, and other contaminants. This is required by the NJ-CRC for every product on our shelves.

Start by thinking about three things: desired effect (relaxing, energizing, sleepy), preferred consumption method (smoking, vaping, eating, sublingual), and experience level (beginner, intermediate, experienced). Our budtenders can narrow it down from there. First-timers should always start low and go slow.

Payments, Discounts & Rewards

9 questions
  • Cash — always accepted in-store and for delivery
  • Pay By Bank — a secure ACH bank transfer option available online and in-store

We do not accept traditional credit or debit cards due to federal banking restrictions on cannabis businesses. An ATM is available on-site at our Bloomfield dispensary.

Cannabis remains a federally controlled substance. Major credit card networks and banks operate under federal oversight and prohibit processing cannabis transactions. This is an industry-wide limitation affecting licensed dispensaries across every legal state — not specific to ETSC. Pay By Bank and cash are the compliant alternatives currently available.

First-Time Buyers Guide

6 questions
  • To be 21 years of age or older
  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • Cash or Pay By Bank to pay

No medical card, no prior experience, and no appointment required. Just let our budtenders know it is your first time and they will guide you through everything.

  • Low-dose edibles (2.5–5mg THC) — easy to dose, no smoke
  • Low-THC flower or pre-rolls — fast onset, easy to control
  • High CBD / low THC products — for a milder, gentler experience
  • Tinctures — precise dosing with faster onset than edibles

Avoid high-THC concentrates as a first experience. Start low, go slow.

The universal beginner rule: start low, go slow.

  • Edibles: Start with 2.5–5mg THC. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more.
  • Flower or vape: Take one small inhale, wait 10–15 minutes to assess how you feel.
  • Tinctures: Start with 2.5–5mg under the tongue. Wait 30–45 minutes.

Common effects include relaxation, euphoria, heightened sensory perception, increased appetite, and sometimes sleepiness. Some new users feel no effect at all the first time — this is normal. If you consume too much and feel anxious or uncomfortable, find a calm space, drink water, and remind yourself the feeling is temporary and will pass.

Absolutely — that is exactly what they are here for. Tell them what you are looking for, your comfort level with THC, and your preferred method of consumption. They will guide you to the right product without pressure or judgment.

Combining cannabis with alcohol can significantly amplify the effects of both and is not recommended, particularly for new users. Cannabis may also interact with certain prescription medications — consult your physician if you take any medications regularly. Always consume responsibly and never drive after use.

We do not provide medical advice. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance specific to your situation.
